- Allan arrived in Victoria in 1852, Allan and Jessie had no children. He was the first licensee of the Court House Hotel in Sydney Road, Brunswick, which was built in 1858 on Lobb's Hill opposite Brunswick's first municipal offices and the Courthouse. He owned several properties and land in Brunswick, Staley Street which is off Blyth Street was named after him, he probably owned land in the area. He was heavily involved in community affairs and was a Councillor in Brunswick from 1868--1870 and 1872-1882, and Mayor in 1872/73 and 1876/77, he stood unsuccessfully for a seat in the State Legislative Assembly in 1868, he was also a Justice of the Peace and took his place in the Magistrates Court. Allan's estate operated until at least 1906, he included all of his siblings (or their descendants) in his will, Probate Records describe him as a "Gentleman", on his marriage certificate he was a Miner, the passenger list for the "Cambodia" described him as an agricultural labourer, so he did very well in his 30 or so years in his new country. Allan and Jessie sailed for London on the "Somersetshire" in April 1870, perhaps they went back to their native Scotland.
