    Notes:

    He was an excellent swimmer in local competitions he was well known and successful, prior to WW1. He enlisted in the Army on 28 Aug. 1914 (No. 2/973) as Trumpeter/Gunner in the N.Z. Field Artillery, 4th. Howitzer Battery, he saw overseas action and rose to Acting Bombardier, he was wounded at Gallipoli, this eventually led to him being discharged medically unfit for war service, on 17 Aug. 1918. He was able to enlist again in the Army as a Driver in WW2 (No. 801197) on 28 Jan. 1942, he didn't leave N.Z., in May 1943 he was a passenger in a truck that crashed, he received some injuries which again led to him being discharged on a part pension on 28 Aug. 1943.

    He and Alice settled in New Zealand between 1891 and 1894, Jonathan established a Drapery business in New Plymouth. He signed documents re the distribution of monies from the Estate of Allan Staley in 1906 which included cost of his fares to and from New Zealand (he was the Executor).

    The records for his birth, baptism and arrival in Victoria, spell the name Blythe but in Victoria the "e" seems to have been dropped, Daniel and Agnes emigrated to Australia as assisted immigrants with their two children, John who was nine and EElizabeth aged three, they sailed from Plymouth on board the "Tasman" of 567 tons on 15 June 1848 arriving at Port Phillip on 18 October after a voyage which lasted just over 4 months, they may have gone to Geelong where Agnes' mother disembarkeked but they soon settled in Brunswick. In 1863 he is recorded in the Sands & MacDougall directory in Albert Street and later in Sydney Road, Brunswick. He was an early resident in Brunswick, in the late 1840's, he was a Grocer and owned severaal properties, later he built a brick shop at the corner of Albert Street and Sydney Road; it was a butcher's shop which remained there until 1917 when it became a fish shop, by 1872 Daniel had moved to a residence in Sydney Road, north of Albion Street, Blyth Street in Brunswick is named after him, he was very well regarded in the area. Daniel's Will mentions some of his siblings and a couple of their descendants, this was instrumental in tracing those people.

    Agnes was a twin, Scots Origins Index lists Agnes and a Jonathan being christened on the same day, 1st. March, 1820. Agnes died of Chronic Nephritis (Kidneys) & Endocarditis (Heart). Agnes' Death Certificate lists 7 children, 3 named Mary, 3 named John or Jonathan, and Elizabeth, only 3 were alive at the time of her death.

    Mary arrived with 4 of her children at Geelong, Victoria, Australia on 31 March 1852 aboard the "Cambodia" a vessel of 914 tons, also on board was another daughter, Mary along with her husband and their three children, who were bound for the golldfields. There are eleven children of Jonathan and Mary listed on Mary's death certificate, James and the first John had their ages are given as 0 although James reached at least 10 years by 1841, there was evidence of another son, Jonathan who was Christened on the same day as Agnes and was her twin.
