    Notes:

William Staley lived in Inglewood, Victoria, Australia. The following is an extract from a booklet titled " A Brief History of Inglewood" by Ian J Wemyss. It was published for a back to Inglewood function. "...The South Gordon. The last mine t to be operated on a grand scale was the South Gordon. In October 1936 this company acquired a working option over a mine called the "Trivalve" on the Old Inglewood, or Jersey line of reef which had been worked intermittently from 1927 to 1936 b by the late W J Staley. Various partners over the period, lacking faith in his enterprise, tired of it, but Mr Staley's belief never wavered. He disposed of a profitable boot-repair business and invested his own money in sinking the shaft to 200 feet. With the assistance of one of his brothers, the late John Staley, stone studded with gold was exposed. Altogether, the brothers recovered about 1000 ozs of gold and only the fact that expensive machinery was now necessary for efficient operation of the ground, influenced them to part with their interest to the South Gordon Company. In its first three months of operation the company crushed 240 tons for a yield of 939 ozs. Further good crushings were obtained from easily won stone, but the all too familiar evil soon took over. Squabbles between the directors and shareholders contributed towards a stoppage of operations in June 1939, then finally a liquidation order was issued upon the company in February 1940....". Bill saw out his later years looking after the greens at the local lawn bowls club. He and Gladys lived in a large house in Grant St Inglewood. The property has since been sold.

    Notes:

Annie was married at the home of her stepfather, Gustav Breitzmann. Her mother had remarried in 1878. (And again toTheodore Jessen in 1898.) Annie died in 1927 and her obituary from a local paper (probably the Inglewood Advertiser) follows: "Mrs Annie Keel, wife of the late Charles Keel died suddenly at her home on the Jersey Hill on Friday, where she was living with her son, Mr W J Staley. For a few days she had been indisposed, but there was nothing to indicate her condition was serrious and her demise came as a great shock to Mr Staley and other members of the family. The deceased lady , who was 65 years of age, had never previously suffered a days sickness having enjoyed remarkable health. She was twice married, her first husband being the late Mr Jonathan Staley. Born at Inglewood she was widely known and highly respected having lived here all her life. She was an authority on the early doings in the district and was planning a busy week during the Back to Ingnglewood celebration, when it was estimated 40 connections of the family would assemble. Two sons, Messrs W J Staley and C Keel reside in Inglewood, and with them, and other relatives, deep sympathy is expressed. The funeral on Sunday was largely attended. Rev R D Peatt carried out the Anglican service. Mr L Appleby having charge of the mortuary arrangements. Messrs John , Robert, Henry and William Staley and Charles and Edward Keel (sons) acted as bearers." Another "claim to fame" for Annie came via her maternal grandfather, James Lumsden who was a convict, he along with two others received a life sentence for the theft of a snuff box, tortoise shell comb, personal papers and nine pence. James was transported to Hobart in Nov. 1833 on board the"Isabella", he was made a Constable in 1835!
