    • JoAnne C. Swinland, 78, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Lakota, ND, died on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Heartland Care Center in the loving care of her family and Mercy Hospice.

      Funeral Services for JoAnne will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Jamie Desai will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

      Serving as Casket Bearers for JoAnne will be Larry Hatten, Bob Hatten, Duane Carter, Gordon Fugle, Earl Isakson and Kevin Riggin. Music will be provided by Patty Cote.

      JoAnne was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 19, 1931 to William "Bill" and Freda (Westensee) Hatten, who were operating a small store at the time. Four years later, they returned to North Dakota, where her parents farmed until 1950. Her mother being a teacher, she attended grade school in Doyon, Southam, the Cleveland school and Brocket, and finished high school in Devils Lake.

      She married Tom Swinland on Aug. 28, 1949. They moved to Fargo where he was attending the School of Pharmacy. She was employed in the Dairy Dept. as a Secretary. In Casselton, she worked as a secretary/receptionist for Wold Bros. Attorneys and in Leeds, she was receptionist for Dr. White. Their first son, Joel was born in the Cando Hospital. While in Grand Forks, she became primarily a stay at home mom, and brought two more boys (Donald & Robert) into the world. In Devils Lake she spent many years at the desk in Riggin Motors.

      JoAnne was very active in O.E.S. (Eastern Star), which she joined in Leeds serving as Worthy Matron of Acacice Chapter in Grand Forks later as Worthy Matron of Lorraine Chapter in Devils Lake. She had filled several offices in the Grand Chapter of North Dakota. She also served as mother advisor to the rainbow girls for several years, as State Mom, and many years on the advisory boards of the local and state organizations.

      She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary.

      She is survived by her husband Tom, sons Joel and Robert, daughter-in law Connie (Joel) all of Devils Lake; Grandchildren: Alicia of Fargo, Brandy and Carrie of Devils Lake, Darcie of Sheyenne, Jasmine and Katherine of Connecticut. Great Grandchildren: Boden & Aviana of Fargo, Caleb of Devils Lake, Dominick & Tyler of Sheyenne.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill & Freda, son, Donald, brother, William "Billy" Hatten.
